2009/2010 Career Bridge Program Award Public Sector’s winner was Ontario Public Service. Accepting the award on behalf of the Ministry, HR Ontario and OPS, Minister of Government Services, Hon. Harinder S. Takhar addressed a room full of internationally trained attendees, interns, employers for internships for disabled persons, senior execs of leading public and private sector organizations.

Minister Takhar emphasized that in today’s tough economic times such programs play a key role. Firstly, they provide necessary experience, opportunity and reference to trained new immigrants. Secondly, such programs help in making public service more reflective of our population. Finally, as the population ages the government needs to build diverse pool of new talent.

The OPS internship program is an innovative internship program specifically for professional newcomers to Canada, so that they can earn valuable ‘Canadian’ work experience within their related career fields within the Ontario Public Service(OPS).Through this important bridging program, the Ontario government is fulfilling its commitment to help internationally trained individuals (ITIs) integrate into the Ontario labour market, enabling them to contribute to the provincial economy and promoting the OPS as an employer of first choice.

QUOTES
“One of the most important things we all can do to get the economy moving is to make an effective use of the Human Resources talent in this province.” – Harinder S. Takhar, Minister of Government Services.

QUICK FACTS
• In the past year, the ITI program was expanded to nearly double the number of six-month paid internships across the OPS, from 75-130 positions.
• To date, 81 percent of the ITI interns have leveraged their internship experience and found full time professional employment in the province.

Ontario’s first and only South Asian cabinet minister, the Honourable Harinder Singh Takhar has returned from his fourth trip to India for the annual PBD conference in New Delhi. Takhar, who was invited to speak and participate in several panel discussions received several awards during his visit but says his main goal in attending the PBD each year is to bring forth the issues and concerns of the Indo Canadian community.

“It is always nice to be recognized and receive awards but my real goal in attending these conferences is to relay to the India government how they can promote greater trade between India and also what the issues and concerns of Non resident Indians (NRIs) are.”

This year Takhar was asked to speak specifically on the subject of Diaspora Interests and Concerns at the PBD conference and also on Trade opportunities between India and Canada for small and medium sized businesses. That session was organized by the Indo Canada Chamber of Commerce.

“As a former entrepreneur and as the former Minister of Small and Medium sized business, I welcomed the opportunity share some of my thoughts on how Ontario small business can get in on the growth and rapid economic development going on in India.”

But Takhar also raised the very important point that investors must have security and know that their property and investments are protected if India hopes to see greater investment from western and NRI entrepreneurs.

Takhar’s comments to that effect were picked up and featured in major Indian newspapers as he was very straightforward and vocal yet diplomatic in raising the concerns that NRIs have about security of their investments.

“I commend the government of India for the progress they made and look forward to more positive developments on this front,” said Takhar.

Takhar also spoke of Diaspora interests and concerns, starting off by educating the audience of the history of Indo Canadians in Ontario and Canada. He spoke of the success they have achieved in all arena’s and their strong ties to the motherland.

The main issues he raised were those that are most commonly brought to his attention from his constituents and the community: fraudulent marriage, property issues and POI card issues. “I was asked to talk about Diaspora issues and I set out what they were in a very diplomatic way recognizing that the India government has a genuine desire to address these issues so there can be greater cooperation between the two nations,” said Takhar.

And finally, during his visit, Takhar received three major awards.

He received The Outstanding Punjabi Award at a gathering of Global Punjabis at the Hotel Le Meridian in Delhi on January 8, 2010. This award was presented by Maharani Preneet Kaur, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs and wife of former Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh and current Maharani of Patiala.

He also received the ‘Glory of India’ award on the Occasion of Global Friendship Day. The Award was presented Farooq Abdulla, Minister of New and Renewable Energy and by Mukul Balkrishna Wasnik who is the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment on January 7, 2010.

And finally, he received a plaque in appreciation for his remarks and participation at the Bhartiya Parvasi Divas conference presented by Vikrmajit Singh Sahney, International President of the World Punjabi Organization and Co-Chairman of the Commonwealth Business Club of India.

McGuinty Government Investing In Bridge Training Programs

NEWS
August 20, 2009
Internationally trained newcomers to Ontario will have greater opportunities to work in their fields as a result of expanded bridge training programs at York University.

The province is investing $5.2 million towards the university’s new bridge training programs for information technologists and business professionals, in addition to an existing nursing program.

Bridge training programs help newcomers trained overseas get the local training they need to find a job in their field and contribute to Ontario’s economy. The programs provide a variety of transitional supports such as international skills assessment, technical training, local work experience, occupation specific language training and mentorships.

Support for these programs is part of the government’s plan to strengthen the economy by investing in the skills and knowledge of Ontarians.

QUOTES:

“Newcomers often face challenges in finding appropriate and suitable employment.” “This new funding will go along way to help newcomers bridge the gap between their foreign credentials and the local experience.”
- Harinder Takhar, MPP for Mississauga-Erindale and Minister of Government Services.

Ontario’s newcomers are both educated and skilled. This investment in bridge training will help employers access their qualifications and talent sooner.”
- Michael Chan, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

“Once again, the McGuinty government has shown it understands that an investment in postsecondary education is an investment in Ontario’s future. This funding is a vote of confidence for internationally trained newcomers and for York University.”
- Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University

QUICK FACTS

?	Since 2003, bridge training programs have helped more than 30,000 newcomers get jobs and get licensed in their field.
?	About 70 per cent of Ontario’s adult newcomers have post-secondary education or training.

McGuinty Government Saving New Parents Time and Money

NEWS	August 21, 2009

All Ontario parents can now use an online service to register their baby’s birth and apply for a birth certificate and Social Insurance Number, all at the same time.

The Newborn Registration Service lets parents combine three separate processes into one easy-to-use online form. This reduces the amount of waiting and processing time, and saves parents the fee that some municipalities used to charge for birth registration.

This online service is a joint project between ServiceOntario and Service Canada and was first launched in 2007. It is now available in all Ontario communities.

QUOTES

“Just a few years ago, getting these documents meant form after form and weeks of waiting. Combining them into an all-in-one system makes it easier for families and is part of our ongoing plan to make services faster, friendlier and easier to access.”
– Ontario Government Services Minister Harinder S. Takhar

“Ottawa families want their government to deliver better service, and work together to make things easier for them. This is one great example where we are innovating to make it easier to get things done.”
– Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi

“Parents of newborns have enough to think about when a baby arrives. And so it makes sense for our federal and provincial governments to work together to provide better services to Canadian families, to reduce duplication and red tape whenever we can.”
– MP Royal Galipeau on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development

“This service is so easy to use, that it was obviously designed with parents in mind. It may seem like a small thing, but to the busy parent having quick access means a lot.”
– Ottawa Hospital Birth Unit Patient Information Representative Dana Mitchell

QUICK FACTS

?	More than 89 per cent of Ontario parents used the online version instead of the paper-based system when given the option.
?	So far, 102,000 parents have used the online service in 92 communities across Ontario.
?	Most parents that use the Newborn Registration Service receive their baby’s birth certificate in five days.
